The recently released Netflix live-action series 'Teach You A Lesson' starring Kim Moo-yeol and Im Han-rim, originally adapted from Webtoon's 'Get Schooled', has sparked heated debate and controversy on the internet for its problematic depiction of gender,racial remarks and violence. Plot

The traditional school education system crumbles,the bullies become superior and teachers loses their agency.To protect teachers and victim's rights a government agency Educational Rights and Protection Bureau (ERPB) is established, and it's member Na Hwa-jin (Kim Moo-yeol) is sent to problematic schools to tackle school related issues in harsh and unconventional ways, and protect education rights of teacher, students and parents. 

Controversy 

The drama was under fire before its production began.The Teachers Union protested in front of the Netflix office against the adaptation of the drama, arguing that it portrays violence and corporal punishment as solutions to problems within schools. Which can harmfully influence the viewers.

As,South Korea fully prohibits corporal punishment for children across all the country, including schools, kindergarten,and at home. 
Allegedly, the original webtoon contained highly insensitive racial remarks,slurs and stereotypes,causing huge outrage by overseas fans,which later led to the webtoon being taken down from the American platform.

Later,apologies were issued by the creators addressing the outrage,and content was removed by Naver permanently.
The Webtoon and drama adaptation are both being criticized by Korean women for its sexist framing by making mockery of feminism and showing wrongly promoted physical punishment.
The Production and Director, Hong Jong Chan addresses the issue and ensured that the team's approach to Webtoon was taken with the utmost consideration and all the problematic content was removed due to the extreme concerns.

Meanwhile, the global k-drama fans argue that the bullies should taste their medicine,and they deserve the harsh punishment as is shown in the drama.Some believe that the controversies around the drama are exaggerated and hyperanalyzed as it,in the end,is a work of fiction.

Final Thoughts 

The 10 episode series is well-written,fast-paced and engaging.It tries to deliver the message with more depth and awareness regarding school violence and related crimes that target students, teachers,parents,its perpetrators and abusers of power sitting in the system.
The drama doesn't only focus on juvenile delinquency, it also question the adult who plays significant role in it.Through various cases involving bullying, violence, drugs, and crime,shows how neglectful parenting, unhealthy family environments,excessive academic pressure,and irresponsible adults can influence a child's behavior and negatively affect schools,teachers,other students and even parents.
