Why K-drama fans are shifting towards C-dramas?

"Discover why K-drama fans are increasingly watching C-dramas and what makes Chinese dramas so appealing to romance lovers
There has been a sudden rise in the popularity of C-dramas among K-drama fans. Many K-drama viewers have recently been seen switching to Chinese dramas. This shift made Team NewKdrama dig deeper into C-dramas to understand what Chinese dramas are offering that is captivating K-drama audiences.
So if you’re not entirely sure why you’ve been enjoying C-dramas more than K-dramas lately, let us explain.
Many K-drama fans who feel nostalgic about the 2016 era of K-dramas seem to be the ones gravitating toward C-dramas. The classic romance, emotional storytelling, and slower character development are some of the elements drawing viewers in.

Please note: This is a generalized analysis. It may or may not reflect every single K-drama or C-drama out there. Exceptions always exist.
Kdrama-vs-cdrama

Choice Vs Destiny

K-dramas have increasingly started portraying romance between their leads as a choice. Despite every hardship they go through, they still choose each other. Even when life offers better options or easier paths, they continue to stand by one another.
For example, Ae-sun and Gwan-sik face many hardships. In When Life Gives You Tangerines, Geum-myeong asks Ae-sun if she would marry a rich man. Ae-sun simply says no.
C-dramas, on the other hand, often portray love as destiny, sometimes symbolized by the idea of the “red thread of destiny.” Of course, this does not apply to every C-drama. However, destiny usually plays a bigger role. The characters may try to walk away if they can, but they ultimately remain tied to each other, with fate bringing them back together again and again.

Cinematography

C-dramas are often praised for their aesthetically pleasing visuals ie. Cinematography. Fans love watching their favourite actor and actresses but beyond the attractive cast, fans also appreciate the cinematography—the way each scene gets filmed, frame by frame. It’s not just the natural scenery, for eg. Can this love be translated and pursuit of jade, but also the meaningful interactions between the leads that captures viewers heart by it's visuals.
A great drama does not only depend on storyline but also depends on atmosphere, lighting, composition, sound and camera work, which makes moments in dramas feel more impressive to viewers.
K-dramas like 'Alchemy of Souls' and 'Can This Love Be Translated?' are also highly appreciated by fans for similar reasons. Similar to C-dramas like the first frost and pursuit of jade. Their strong cinematography and visually pleasing storytelling make them memorable for audiences. Strong visuals often leads to higher viewer retention, as audiences are less likely to skip scenes when the cinematography is engaging even if there is no dialogue in the scene itself. For eg, action scenes.
The beautiful scenery is not only visually pleasing but also helps viewers to connect more deeply with the story and characters.

Sexual Tension between Leads

Sexual tension is often referred to as “chemistry” among fans. Earlier K-dramas were filled with moments of sexual tension that didn’t immediately lead to a pay off. Often lasting until episode 8 to 12 before the leads finally kissed or defined their relationship. That's why, you will see fans complaining about drama getting boring, once the leads are in a relationship, because the fans loves anticipation.

Almost-kisses, a touch that lingers slightly longer than expected, eye contacts, the look of love, accidental touches, and heart fluttering moments were common in older rom-com K-dramas, not so much in recent kdramas. These small moments built anticipation and kept viewers emotionally invested.
Fans feels that in many recent rom-com K-dramas this element have significantly reduced, compared to dramas released before 2020. Even simple moments like holding hands were once seen as a big romantic milestone among audiences watching Asian dramas because viewers had to wait for 8 episodes for such pay offs.
Recently, many K-dramas have shifted toward a more realistic portrayal of romance, which sometimes reduces the slow burn romantic tension between the leads. That tension: those quiet, charged moments between characters, is often what makes viewers feel excited and emotionally involved in the relationship. Quick escalation of romance among leads is often not preferred by fans.
Both K-drama and C-drama fans who enjoy romantic comedies and tend to appreciate slow-burn romance. Many viewers who have shifted toward C-dramas often mention that they miss the strong on screen chemistry that older K-dramas were known for.

Westernisation of kdramas

Recently, some fans have been blaming the westernization, or what many call the “Netflix-ification,” of K-dramas.
With kdramas going global, Many recent K-dramas focus more on thriller and darker themes, series like All of Us Are Dead, The Frog, Dear X, The glory, Weak Hero Class, Light Shop etc. These dramas are still loved by audiences and fans for their strong story writing and impressive direction.
However, older thriller K-dramas were often structured differently. Many followed a 'one-case-per-episode' format, while the final 4 to 6 episodes were dedicated to resolving the main plot.
In recent years, K-dramas have been producing more thrillers than before. There are more thriller kdramas than rom-coms nowadays. Because of this shift, rom-com fans may find themselves drawn toward C-dramas instead, since C-dramas are significantly production romance dramas more.
That doesn’t mean thriller K-dramas are bad or not worth watching. In fact, many of them are highly engaging and entertaining, loved by fans. However, this shift in genre focus is one reason why some K-drama fans who prefer romance are gradually leaning toward C-dramas.
