Lee Min-ki portrays Jo Hyun-woo, a terminal brain-tumor patient, in Episode 1 of Mary Kills People—a gripping medical thriller korean drama.

About the Drama

Mary Kills People is a 12-episode Korean drama airing on MBC from August 1 to September 6, 2025, every Friday and Saturday at 22.00 KST. This drama is directed by Park Joon-woo and written by Lee Soo-a. It is a remake of a renowned Canadian series of the same name that ran from 2017 to 2019.

The drama stars Lee Bo-young as Dr. Woo So-jeong, Kang Ki-young as Choi Dae-hyun, and Lee Min-ki as Jo Hyun-woo. Combining elements of crime, medical drama, and moral dilemma, the story follows a doctor who illegally performs euthanasia for terminally ill patients, her partner-in-crime, and the detectives and politicians determined to find them.

Episode 1 Plot

The episode opens with Dr. Woo (Lee Bo-young) and her partner Choi Dae-hyun (Kang Ki-young) helping a former athlete to end his life. Unexpectedly, the drug they used fails, and Dr. Woo is forced to suffocate him, making the job much riskier, which also hints at a bigger problem in their illegal work coming up.

Meanwhile, Jo Hyun-woo (Lee Min-ki) is shown as a man who has no family, trying to keep working despite the constant pain he feels. He refused painkillers, saying they won’t help, and even put himself in danger by walking into the traffic while being under morphine. Dr. Woo rescued him and later agreed to help him end his life.

The portrayal of Jo Hyun-woo is quiet but impactful, showing the exhaustion and desperation of someone who has reached the limit of what their body can endure.

A strong Start

To me personally, this drama started strong. Especially with its ending scene, which is set two years ago, showing Dr. Woo confessing her sin of how she made one of her patients go through hell by giving them countless treatments for two years, only for them to die. It has made its main question clear: Is Dr. Woo a criminal, or is she actually helping people who have no other choice?

This episode moves quickly, building suspense with emotional scenes. There are also hints of danger for Dr. Woo’s family, adding more drama outside of her illegal secret job.

With its mix of crime, tension, and moral questions, Mary Kills People is definitely worth watching! What do you think? Let’s talk in the comments!
